Leadership Development Training at MJ Electric Gets Results
MJ Electric, a nationally recognized prime electrical firm, has institutionalized its strong leadership development training program as a vibrant part of its culture. But that wasn’t always the case. In 2016, the executive team knew they needed to invest in their high potentials, but they couldn’t agree on the right approach to leadership development training. While Steve Feira, vice president of Human Resources, was contemplating what to do for their program, he received a call from IMPACT Group.
“We were ready to invest, but our internal resources didn’t allow us to develop a program on our own,” Steve shares. “Together with IMPACT Group, we conceptualized a program to meet our needs.”
Its Three Key Components to Leadership Development Training
In addition to instructor-led training, three key components of MJ Electric’s leadership training program are: leadership coaching; leadership assessments and capstone projects. Each participant gets one-on-one coaching from an external leadership coach. According to Steve, the quality of the coaching has made a big impact. IMPACT Group’s leadership coaches are experienced, well credentialed, and adhere to IMPACT Group’s strong methodology. “Coaches give meaningful, digestible feedback,” Steve acknowledges. “They tell the participants when they’re veering off course. And in some cases, the program participants say they’ve never before been coached to this extent. They’ve never had such actionable feedback.”
The coaches also lead the program participants through a personal assessment process. And coaches use the capstone projects to help leaders build competencies. These emerging leaders work on their business acumen or other areas they’ve targeted for growth. The result? Each year these emerging leaders’ capstone projects produce measurable output that Steve describes as having “tremendous importance to the business.” He also notes that the work is recognized by executive leadership.
